Saluting Our Soldiers & Good Health

Memorial Day is just around the corner and this is a special observance with special customs.

First and foremost, it’s a time we share to sanctify the memory of the brave men and women who died protecting our flag under which we are so lucky and blessed to live.

To all of those in the armed forces, we thank you for your service and pray for your continued safety.

On a lighter note…… Memorial Day is also the unofficial start of summer, bathing suit season and all that comes with it — wearing white as well as friends and families around the pool, on the beach and at BBQs.

Speaking of BBQs, nearly 2 out of 3 Americans are expected to enjoy BBQs this Memorial Day.  In addition, they’re also expected to consume more than 1.3 billion dollars worth of chicken, pork, and meat.

Is this a good thing?  Well, in terms of quantity, as we always state: “everything in moderation.”

And in terms of food choice, absolutely.  Chicken, pork and meat are high in protein and good fats.  

In fact, have you ever heard of the keto diet? These meats are actually staples on this diet.

Which brings us to the next obvious question –

What is the keto diet exactly?

Well, it can be summed up in three easy rules:

  1.       lots of healthy-fats
  2.       moderate amounts of protein
  3.       small amounts of carbs

The ketogenic diet has grown in popularity as the choice diet to get back into shape. It is also known in clinical circles to help better manage blood pressure, A1C levels and weight loss.

How?

We’ve discussed this before in earlier blogs. Let’s review quickly again.

Most people assume that energy in their food is provided by a small, sugary molecule we call glucose. That’s what we find in carbs and starches.  The abundance, ease and availability of glucose make it the body’s go-to source of energy.

However, when eating a low-carb diet, glucose becomes scarce and the body turns to the unsung alternative for energy-creation — the fatty molecules called Ketones.

So, yes, the weekend summer BBQ could indeed be a friend if you are on the keto diet.
